Jelena shared the shocking news of her surgery with fans last Friday after she was taken into surgery to have a ‘large’ growth removed from her uterus.

The former pro tennis player revealed in a lengthy message on Instagram that she had a fibroid—a non-cancerous growth—removed from her body.

‘Fibroid removal surgery done,’ she began writing alongside two images which showed her lying in a bed at the Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne.

‘Just had my surgery to remove a large fibroid (a non-cancerous growth on the uterus) and it all went well.

‘A bit sore from the four cuts on my stomach and abdomen but all normal and in recovery now.

‘I will be taking it slow for a bit but will be back up on my feet very soon.’

Jelena went on to say she wanted to ‘raise awareness’ for the ’70 per cent of women’ who get fibroids ‘by the age of 50’.

‘That’s a massive number and there has not been a lot of awareness or talk about it,’ she penned.’

‘Some women it will not affect at all and some will have a lot of pain and bleeding depending on where it is and how big it is,’ she continued.

‘Please get your scans, regular gynaecological check-ups and if anything ever feels off or painful please don’t dismiss it and go to your doctor.

‘Also, always advocate for your health no matter what because these and other women’s reproductive issues can sometimes be dismissed.’

Jelena encouraged her followers to get second opinions from medical professionals and to ‘get the scans and ultrasounds for your own safety’.

She thanked Frances Perry House for all their help, giving a special shout-out to ‘the team of doctors, nurses, anaesthetist and everyone that looked after me’.

‘The most incredible care pre and post operation and most importantly all done with so much kindness, care and with a smile on their faces,’ she said.

‘You made me feel so comfortable and looked after and like I was in the safest hands.

‘Thank you from the bottom of my heart to each and every one of you that I met and that looked after me.

‘Legends that don’t get enough credit and spotlight and absolutely should.

‘And a big thank you to “my people” that all called, sent messages, flowers and are here for me. You know who you are. Love you all.’
