The agonising search for Nancy Guthrie may soon enter a far more limited phase, according to reports — delivering a devastating blow to her family as the case stretches into its fourth week with no confirmed breakthrough.
Nancy, 84, was last seen at her Arizona home on January 31 and was officially reported missing the following day. Since then, the disappearance of the Today show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother has sparked one of the most extensive investigations the region has seen in years.

More than 400 investigators from multiple law-enforcement agencies have been assigned to the case, working around the clock in the desperate effort to find answers. But sources now say that a lack of recent progress may force authorities to scale back resources in the coming days.

According to ABC News, Savannah and her family have already been informed of the possibility — a sobering sign that the investigation is shifting into a slower, long-term phase.
An insider told the outlet that while the case remains active, leads have begun to dry up, and the intense early-stage manpower cannot be sustained indefinitely.
“It has been over two weeks,” ABC News contributor Rich Frankel said. “In these types of investigations, at some point you have to move to a long-term, sustainable level of manpower.”
LEADS FAIL TO MATERIALISE
Investigators have spent weeks analysing chilling surveillance footage showing a masked individual approaching Nancy’s home on the night she disappeared. Despite initial urgency, leads connected to the suspect have so far failed to produce arrests or confirmed persons of interest.
DNA recovered from inside the home remains unidentified, and there has been no official update regarding items believed to have been purchased at Walmart and seen in footage of the suspect outside the property.
A police spokesperson stressed that the case is far from closed.
“This remains an active investigation,” they told The New York Post. “As long as leads continue to come in, investigators will continue to follow up on them.”
Officials added that thousands of tips are still being reviewed by personnel across various agencies.
VOLUNTEERS STEP IN
As law enforcement faces mounting pressure, members of the public have taken the search into their own hands.
On Sunday, volunteers scouring desert terrain reportedly discovered a black rucksack, which was immediately handed over to police for examination.
Earlier this month, a couple walking in the desert roughly one mile from Nancy’s home said they found a pair of blood-stained black gloves and a rock bearing what appeared to be a blood spot, according to local outlet KVOA.
The couple, who spoke anonymously, contacted authorities and were questioned at the scene before being allowed to leave, while investigators remained until around 2am.
A BRIEF FLICKER OF HOPE
A momentary sense of progress came on February 10, when the FBI recovered previously lost surveillance footage from the night Nancy vanished. The footage showed a masked figure approaching her home, reigniting hopes of a breakthrough.
However, while the FBI later stated it had “names and photos” potentially linked to the masked individual, no arrests have been made and no suspects have been publicly identified.
The FBI has described the individual they are seeking as male, approximately 5’9”–5’10”, of average build, carrying a black backpack.
REWARD INCREASED
As leads stalled, the reward for information grew.
The total reward for information leading to Nancy’s recovery or the arrest of those responsible has risen to $202,500, including:
- $100,000 offered by the FBI
- $100,000 from an anonymous donor
- $2,500 from Tucson Crime Stoppers (88-CRIME)
Despite the growing financial incentive, investigators acknowledge that time is working against them.
A FAMILY WAITING IN LIMBO
For Savannah Guthrie and her family, the potential scaling back of the search represents a cruel new phase — not an end, but a slowing of momentum at a time when hope feels increasingly fragile.
Nancy’s home has been declared a crime scene. Blood was found outside. Surveillance footage exists — but clarity does not.
As the investigation moves forward under quieter conditions, the unanswered questions remain heavy:
Where is Nancy Guthrie?
Who was seen near her home that night?
And will the narrowing search finally bring answers — or only silence?
For now, the hunt continues — slower, more uncertain, and no less painful.
