Missing Man, 82, with Dementia Found Alive by Volunteer and Their Dog During Search Party

A missing and endangered 82-year-old man has been found alive, according to police in Michigan.

Ralph Yang, 82, disappeared on Monday, June 23, according to a news release from the Ann Arbor Police Department.

Police said Yang, who has Parkinson’s disease, was last seen around 7:15 p.m. local time on Monday in the area of Pin Oak Drive and White Oak Drive “when he went for a walk.”

Two days later, a community volunteer and their dog Dolly found Yang in a creek shortly before 9 p.m. in the 2500 block of Newport Road, police said in news releases on Wednesday, June 25.

Yang was “fairly responsive” and “able to communicate” with those on scene before he was transported to the University of Michigan Hospital, police said.

Authorities shared an image on Facebook of officers carrying Yang to safety. Body camera footage from the rescue has also been released.

In the footage, obtained by ABC affiliate WXYZ-TV, police raced into a wooded area after a woman pointed to where Yang was located.

Three other individuals were standing near Yang, who was lying in the creek, when police arrived.

“We’ve got you, sir! We have you, sir!” said one of the two officers who helped pick up Yang and carry him out of the woods. In the background, volunteers can be heard telling others, “We got him!”

After reaching the road, officers held Yang for several minutes until paramedics arrived at the scene. Yang was subsequently placed on a stretcher as he was tended to by police, paramedics and community members.

In addition to having Parkinson’s disease, Ann Arbor Police Chief Andre Anderson said Yang also has a history of dementia, according to NBC affiliate WDIV-TV.

Sergeant Mark Pulford said hot temperatures were a concern for police as they searched for Yang, WXYZ-TV reported.

Police thanked those who assisted in the search for Yang. They said more than 200 volunteers were searching for Yang on Wednesday night, while 60 people searched for him earlier in the day, WDIV-TV reported.
