The harrowing case of 10-year-old Sara Sharif, a tragedy that ignited global outrage and exposed a staggering “campaign of torture,” has entered a violent new chapter within the British penal system. Urfan Sharif, the father who confessed to the brutal killing of his young daughter, has reportedly survived a targeted assassination attempt by fellow inmates who sought to enforce the “convict code.”
The murder of Sara Sharif remains one of the most disturbing accounts of domestic child abuse in recent memory. On August 8, 2023, the bright, loving 10-year-old was found dead in a bunkbed at her family home in Woking, Surrey. According to evidence presented in court, she had been subjected to two years of systematic abuse. Investigators discovered a chilling confession note at the scene, written in her father’s hand:
“Whoever see this note, it’s me Urfan Sharif who killed my daughter by beating. I am running away because I am scared… I swear to God that my intention was not to kill her. But I lost it.”
A Global Manhunt and a Gruesome Discovery
The discovery of Sara’s body launched an international manhunt after it was revealed that Urfan Sharif, his partner Beinash Batool, and his brother Faisal Malik had fled to Pakistan the day before the police arrived. Upon their eventual capture and extradition, the full scale of the cruelty was laid bare.
A post-mortem examination revealed more than 70 distinct injuries. Sara had suffered 11 spinal fractures, a traumatic brain injury, a puncture wound to the head, and broken ribs. Further examination found a burn on her buttock—inflicted by a domestic iron—and human bite marks.
During the trial, the trio initially denied involvement, but the weight of the evidence eventually forced a shift. Urfan Sharif finally admitted in court, “She died because of me.”
On December 17, 2024, justice was delivered in the courtroom:
- Urfan Sharif (42): Sentenced to life with a minimum of 40 years.
- Beinash Batool (30): Sentenced to life with a minimum of 33 years.
- Faisal Malik (29): Sentenced to 16 years for causing or allowing the death of a child.
Mr. Justice Cavanagh described the case as one of “inconceivable” cruelty. Sara’s biological mother, Olga Domin, branded the defendants “executioners” and “sadists,” telling the court that her daughter is now an “angel… no longer experiencing violence.”
The “Inmate Code” at HMP Belmarsh
The transition from the courtroom to the cell block brought a different brand of judgment. Sharif was remanded to HMP Belmarsh in South London—a high-security facility often dubbed “Britain’s Guantanamo Bay.” Despite his attempts to “keep his head down,” his reputation as a child killer preceded him.
In the hierarchy of prison life, those convicted of crimes against children occupy the lowest rung. On New Year’s Day, only weeks into his 40-year minimum term, that “inmate code” was violently enforced.
Reports indicate that two prisoners, reportedly sickened by the details of Sara’s abuse, ambushed Sharif in his cell. The attackers utilized a makeshift “shiv” crafted from the jagged lid of a tuna tin.
“Urfan was sliced up badly in his cell by two others who rushed in. It was planned… He was sliced in the neck and face and is still in healthcare and in a very bad way,” a prison source told The Sun.
A Marked Man
Sharif survived the assault but was left with permanent facial scarring and required extensive stitching. Prison guards had reportedly been on high alert, aware that Sharif had a “target on his back” due to the high-profile nature of his crimes.
One of the alleged attackers has been identified as Steve Sansom, a double murderer currently serving a life sentence for the 2024 dismemberment of Sarah Mayhew and the 1999 killing of a taxi driver.
Internal sources suggest the attack was viewed by the general population of the prison as inevitable. “Something like this was always on the cards… A lot of them are saying how it couldn’t have happened to a more deserving guy,” the insider added.
As Sharif recovers in the prison’s healthcare wing, the incident serves as a grim reminder that for those who commit the most heinous crimes against the vulnerable, the sentence handed down by a judge is often only the beginning of their punishment.
