‘Cheers’ star George Wendt dies aged 76

Heartfelt tributes are flooding in following the passing of beloved actor George Wendt, best remembered as Norm Peterson on the iconic sitcom Cheers.

The TV legend’s family has confirmed that George peacefully passed away in his sleep at his home early Tuesday morning, May 20, leaving behind a legacy that touched millions.

“George was a devoted family man and a cherished friend—an irreplaceable confidant to everyone fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed,” a family representative told the BBC.

Wendt’s portrayal of the affable Norm Peterson on the beloved sitcom Cheers catapulted him to stardom. He appeared in all 275 episodes of the show, which aired from 1982 to 1993, earning six consecutive Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

Ted Danson, Wendt’s longtime Cheers co-star, expressed his sorrow in a heartfelt statement to the New York Post:
“I am devastated to hear that Georgie is no longer with us. I’m sending all my love to Bernadette and the children. It’s going to take me a long time to get used to this. I love you, Georgie.”

Speaking to ABC News, John Ratzenberger, who played Cliff Clavin on Cheers, reflected warmly on his years with Wendt:
“For eleven years on Cheers, we shared the stage, countless laughs, and front-row seats to one of television’s most beloved friendships. George brought Norm to life with a subtle brilliance—the kind that made it all look effortless. That was his true gift.”

According to reports, Wendt was last seen in public in Los Angeles in late January this year. The Mirror captured photos of him exiting a car alongside his wife, using a cane.

While the exact cause of his death remains unconfirmed, Wendt had reportedly faced health challenges in recent years, including complications related to his weight. He had been hospitalized for chest pains and underwent coronary bypass surgery.

Concerns about his health had grown following the Cheers cast reunion at the ATX TV Festival in June 2023, which commemorated the 30th anniversary of the show’s finale. Fans and critics alike noted that Wendt appeared visibly unwell during the event, sparking widespread discussion.

Fans were quick to voice their concern online after Wendt’s appearance at the reunion. One viewer wrote, “The guy on the right, George Wendt, looks like he needs to see a doctor for jaundice.” Another added, “Is George okay? 😳 He looks really unwell.” A third commented, “Good lord, George Wendt looks absolutely awful. 😣”

Beyond his iconic role on Cheers, Wendt enjoyed a diverse career spanning more than four decades, appearing in numerous TV shows and films since 1978. His unforgettable talent and warm presence will be deeply missed.

Rest in peace, George Wendt — a true television legend.
