LAPD sergeant, 2nd motorist killed in SB 405 crash near Getty Center; all lanes closed

A Los Angeles Police Department sergeant and one other driver were killed in a multi-vehicle collision that left a third motorist injured and forced the southbound lanes of the 405 Freeway to remain closed for several hours through the Brentwood area of Los Angeles Monday morning.

The incident was reported around 2 a.m. near Moraga Drive, not far from Sunset Boulevard.

Video showed a badly damaged pickup truck, a sedan with airbags deployed and an LAPD patrol car left on the southbound side of the freeway as emergency crews were responding.

The two other victims were transported to local hospitals in unknown condition.

A law enforcement officer involved in the crash was down and not responding when found, according to the California Highway Patrol’s traffic incident log.

That person was later identified as LAPD Sgt. Shiou Deng during a morning news conference held by Police Chief Jim McDonnell and attended by Mayor Karen Bass. Deng was later pronounced dead at the hospital, McDonnell said.

Deng had apparently come across a disabled vehicle, turned on his lights and left his vehicle to help when he was struck.

A third person involved in the crash was also transported to a local hospital in unknown condition.

At one point, a helicopter landed on the freeway, possibly to transport one of the patients.

All lanes on the southbound side of the freeway remained closed as of 7 a.m.

Motorists traveling through the Sepulveda Pass were experiencing massive delays as drivers were being taken off the freeway at Getty Center Drive.
